Strategic HR consulting that aligns people strategy to business goals

People strategy aligned to business goals — from structure to policy to culture. The question is never "what does good HR look like" in the abstract, but what this organisation needs its people practices to do next.

Where strategic HR consulting fits

Most organisations reach a point where the people practices that carried them this far stop scaling. Decisions that were made informally now need a framework. Roles that overlapped harmlessly at thirty people create real friction at a hundred and fifty. Policies written for one office no longer describe how the company actually works.

Strategic HR consulting is the work of redesigning those practices deliberately rather than letting them accrete. It starts from the business plan — what the organisation is trying to do over the next few years — and works backwards to the structure, policies and processes that would support it.

It is deliberately not a template exercise. A framework lifted from a much larger organisation usually adds administrative weight without adding capability.

Organisation structure and role design

Structure work asks who owns what, who decides what, and where accountability currently has gaps or duplicates.

The practical outputs are role definitions that distinguish between what a person does and what they are accountable for, reporting lines that match how work actually flows, and spans of control that let managers manage rather than merely approve.

HR policy and process architecture

Policy work covers the documented framework an organisation runs on: how people are hired, confirmed, promoted, compensated, developed and exited.

Good policy is short, findable and consistent with what actually happens. Policy that contradicts practice is worse than no policy, because it teaches people that the written rules are decorative.

  • Employee handbook and policy documentation
  • Hiring, confirmation and probation frameworks
  • Leave, attendance and workplace policy
  • Grievance and escalation processes
  • Exit and offboarding processes

Performance management frameworks

A performance framework is a communication system before it is an evaluation system. Its main job is making sure people know what they are being measured on while there is still time to act on it.

We design frameworks around what an organisation can realistically sustain. An elaborate quarterly system that managers quietly abandon in month four is worse than a simpler one they actually run.

Working alongside your HR team

Where there is an in-house HR function, our role is to add capacity and an outside view, not to work around it. The people who will operate a framework after we leave should be shaping it while we are there.

Where there is no HR function yet, the work usually includes deciding what should be built internally, what can stay external, and in what order.

Common questions

Strategic HR Consulting, answered

What does a strategic HR consultant actually do?
Works on the design of the people function rather than its day-to-day operation: organisation structure, role and accountability design, HR policy, performance frameworks, and the alignment between all of those and the business plan. It is design and advisory work, distinct from running payroll or processing transactions.
Do you work with companies that already have an internal HR team?
Frequently. In-house teams often have the context but not the bandwidth for a redesign, or want an external perspective on something they are too close to. We work alongside the existing team so that whoever operates the framework afterwards has shaped it.
Is this a one-off project or an ongoing retainer?
Both models exist. Discrete pieces — a structure review, a policy rewrite, a performance framework — are usually project-based. Organisations going through sustained change more often want ongoing advisory support. We agree the model at the outset based on what the work actually requires.
How is strategic HR consulting different from HR outsourcing?
Outsourcing moves the execution of HR processes to an external provider on a continuing basis. Strategic HR consulting designs what those processes should be and hands the design to you. One is about who runs it; the other is about what gets run.
Where does an engagement usually start?
With a diagnostic. Before recommending changes we want to understand how the organisation currently works, what people believe the rules are, and where the friction is actually being felt — which is often not where it was first reported.
